Job Description: Protection Assistant (Screener)
The Protection Assistant (Screener) will support the Protection Unit at border crossing points, assisting in the identification, screening, and referral of vulnerable undocumented returnees. The role requires regular presence at border points (Spin Boldak, Torkham, or Kabul) and close coordination with protection teams to ensure no vulnerable individuals are excluded from humanitarian assistance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Border Presence: Be physically present during day and evening shifts, especially during high pushback and return periods.
- Screening and Identification: Assist in the screening, identification, and referral of the most vulnerable returnees for protection services.
- Capacity Building: Help train partner staff at border points on identifying and referring vulnerable individuals.
- Reporting: Maintain regular updates and report on return figures (pushbacks, deportations, and spontaneous returnees) to Protection staff in Kabul.
- Coordination: Regularly liaise with the Department of Refugees and Repatriation (DoRR) staff and other protection staff in the province and Kabul.
- Feedback Mechanism: Provide information about the Awaaz Afghanistan-UN call center services to returnees.
- Other Duties: Perform any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Social Science, International Relations, Development Studies, Human Rights, Law, or related fields.
- Or a High School Diploma with three years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience:
- Minimum 1 year of experience in protection case management, working with returnees and vulnerable populations.
- Experience in conducting interviews and referring individuals to appropriate services.
- Familiarity with KOBO for data entry.
- Experience working with migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) is an advantage.
- Experience in preparing monthly reports and working in humanitarian settings.
- Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of humanitarian principles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of IOM activities in Afghanistan, specifically related to undocumented Afghan returnees.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Willingness to collaborate with diverse ethnic and religious groups.
- Problem-solving skills and a good team player.
- Languages:
- Fluency in English (oral and written).
- Working knowledge of Pashto or Dari is required.
- Fluency in all national languages is a plus.
